Meditations in an Emergency

Tell another lie to your mama who's getting by Tell another joke to your brother who doesn't know the secrets you are keeping, the pain you won't give up Tell another lie to your mama who's getting by Give yourself a break and the sadness will go away For all you hold inside, it's a wonder why you never hide You know your time is coming, so keep your chin up Give yourself a break and the sadness will go away The thousand little eyes of the spider who caught the fly could be used by you on all the people you see through. You know they might mean well, kid, but they'll never understand the thousand little eyes of the spider who caught the fly

Dear water, go by me before you freeze We beat dead horses with our words, and in summer time, we find we leave early like the winter sun… Dear Father, your spirit is pouring on me In my mind’s eye, this is a regular street scene, and if I should die, I might end up really going on just like your son… Carried away by his own words, he’s finally unafraid to love this girl, and if she’d just try to work up the courage to love him too… And if she’d just say: -words that sound like others -stop looking under covers -going through the pain we carry, realizing that maybe we're just sages dressedas fools, for believing in love like we do…

About Time 04:31
It isn’t just a game we play on Sundays I love the subtle way of wasting my whole day with you As we’re lying here, I start to wonder, “Could this moment be the one that precedes the biggest one of all?” Call it white or call it black, but I will not ignore this good thing that we have It may be too soon, so I will train my mind on something else this once until it’s right [Chorus 1] Learn to be patient with love; it will pay off, if you just hold your tongue And it’s amazing what a focused mind can do, so I will hold off as long as I can before I say, “I love you.” The first fight didn’t seem so catastrophic The way you looked at me with anger in your eyes didn’t scare me off like it usually would Something must have happened to me to make me stand by you… Deeper, still, did I feel, but it was not the time to say what I had in mind; however, I knew that I was on the right track—the day was coming soon; my mantra followed through! [Chorus 2] Learn to be patient with love! It will pay off, if you just hold your tongue! It works the same way for everything—a little patience and some time is the best way… [Bridge] We live our lives before we die believing that we’re racing time. We scramble to find the one, we jump the gun, and then our time is up! In reality, the Game tests your patience, your ability to go for what you want, then along the way, you must realize that love, too, is in its own way a job. Take that as you will, but if there’s one you want, don’t run and tell him how you feel! There will be a time, until then act as if you’ve got nothing to lose— and from many to choose! [Chorus 3] Learn to be patient with love! It will pay off, if you just hold your tongue! It works the same way for everything—a little waiting and some time is the best way Learn to be patient with love! It will pay off, if you just hold your tongue! It works the same way for everything—a little waiting’s all you’ll do before you say, “I love you!”

Even through the pain of a wasted day I’ll say, “If I only had my way…” I would stop all time, not to make you mine or even whine. To find solace in no sound is what I need. I’m seeing through all ill-conceived concepts of our time; it’s things, not purpose, we’re keen on moving toward. I’ll take it in stride, not turning a blind eye or even say, “If I only had my way…” The stopping of all time is neither fair nor right, so I must try to be conscious of myself in thought! In seeing through all ill-conceived concepts of our time… The age is written, we have all that we need—but we still want more. In the morning when I rise, I hope I have new strength in mind by thinking, “This could be a way…” To be right’s unnecessary—secondary—to the life I’ll come to know in time!

Resignation 03:17
How do I get you out of my life when the world feels so small?! Isn’t a “Get out!” ever just fine, ‘though it never comes to pass. Why can’t the rain fall around our heads, if we ask with a “Please?” Maybe it just seems over thought out, but with heart, it will come to pass. [Chorus 1] Reacting in vain to thoughts we have is our downfall Making it plain might be best for all who are involved History’s never been a small thing, if we think of the world and and what it’s been through—all of those wars—clouding our past. Rewrite the textbooks. Think up new way to find love in the world! Teachers like codgers ruined our view with their hate into us they imbued. [Chorus 2] Reacting in vain to thoughts we have is our downfall Making it plain might be best for all who are involved, for the ones who rarely care about resolve. [Bridge] Reacting in vain to thoughts we have is our downfall Making it plain for those who are involved, for the ones who rarely care, who’ll die without resolve, but the one thing that I know is we’re meant to own our souls!

In the street-scene that is our lives, we swear off the other, pretending neither’s a vice I go on believing thinking that I’m through, then the night comes and my thoughts are stuck on you… You say the nicest things when you’re drunk, but by your actions, it’s almost always bunk I may try to hide it, but once I’m near you, common sense surrenders and I’m left, spiraling down, asking… [Chorus] “Whisper in my ear, that’s what I want to hear.” All things in 2’s, your words; it’s why I love you, dear. And when the sun comes up, we’ll pretend we’re nothing again. This game we’re playing is nothing new, but the code of ethics is definitely askew… Fate gives us passes by shielding its eyes as we go on wondering, “Where is my prize?” Psychotherapy could settle me, but admitting my faults results in apathy To say that I don’t care where this goes is a lie—I’m holding out at the end of all this just praying you’ll be mine! That’s why I’m asking… [Chorus] “Whisper in my ear, that’s what I want to hear.” All things in 2’s, your words; it’s why I love you, dear. And when the sun comes up, we’ll pretend we’re nothing again. [Bridge] And when we say goodbye I am thinking hello to this boy I know, who’s looking past my stare, pretending not to care… [Chorus] “Whisper in my ear, it’s what I want to hear.” All things in 2’s, your words; that’s why I love you near. And when the sun comes up again, we’ll pretend that we’re nothing more than friends.

At time it’s easy to believe that you finally found a love To meet someone new makes you feel like you’ve caught a bug I’m wasting away because I thought I knew you, but you were playing games As far as love goes for now, I must refrain This technology age does little good for me I read between lines for things I think I see I’m lost and confused, my anger builds up inside—can’t read it through a screen! The years go on and yet again I only have me The thing is film and TV make love seem easy! But in real life, you throw it all on the line to find someone won’t do the same for you… I’ve had my moment to pout now I’m getting through this bullshit once again “Que sera”: my mantra, my only friend… The next thing you have to learn is how other people see: They look at themselves believing they don’t deserve half of what they need! So keep your cool—unlike them, you work through issues Your rocket’s gonna come! -Don’t be sad or cry -Remember stay wise -Without your realizing it, you’ll find him, Mr. Right.

Each song is an original.
They were written between 2012 and 2014.

Liz McBride! Youngstown, Ohio

"There are nightingales and nightingales. This one was a diva, a Callas. One would readily have disbursed a small fortune to hear her sing in a concert hall. Its tone, of an ineffable sweetness... Under a rich, deep, nocturnal sky, they would stand for an hour, hushed and spellbound, listening to the nightingale." ... more
